Parliament has rubber stamped a hotly-debated proposal to increase fess paid by individuals for social and health care services. An opposition challenge to the bill was defeated by 105 votes to 67.
Government parties supported the bill. Members of Parliament absent for the vote numbered 27.
The increased fees for these services will take effect from August. The highest day care fee will increase from 200 to 233 euros, earning government an additional 11 million euros annually.
At the same time some parents with children in day care will continue to enjoy their no-fee status. Changes in income thresholds will mean that 53 percent of parents will pay smaller fees, 12 percent will pay the same, and 35 percent will pay higher fees. Family size may influence day care payments, particularly for low income and large families.
Payment for services at health care centres will increase from 11 euros to just over 13 euros. Other services that will cost more include temporary home health care, open care from health centres and short term institutional care. Fees for dental care increased more than other health care services.
