Water Boiling Adivosry Issued for Korpilahti Municipality

The municipal water network in Korpilahti in central Finland has been contaminated with diarrhoea-causing campylobacters. A boiling advisory is in force at least through Tuesday next week. Residents are urged to boil drinking water for two minutes to kill harmful bacteria. The water can be used as normal for bathing. A chlorination of the Korpilahti water network began on Saturday. Campylobatcters were detected in the water network on Thursday and Friday.

Reports of some 50 residents falling ill last week with stomach ailments spurred officials to test water samples from the water plant.

New cases of stomach cramps and profuse diarrhoea have not surfaced since Friday.

Campylobatcters can be found in animal faecal matter. The source of the water contamination remains unknown.
