Flu Epidemic Could Create Many Temporary Jobs

An epidemic of the H1N1 swine flu virus could improve employment prospects for young people in the autumn. An estimated 20 percent of the population could be off work leading to a serious labour shortage.

Many employers compensate for sick leave absences by extending summer job contracts into the autumn.

Dairy products manufacturer Valio plans to take on extra staff in the event of a labour shortfall due to illness. The company’s Director of Cheese Making Operations, Jyrki Heinimo, told YLE the firm planned to employ as many as dozens of skilled part-time employees.

The problem will be more acute in the health care sector. The City of Vantaa’s Health Care Director, Timo Aronkytö, says the only staff relief would come from medical students nearing graduation and from former employees now on pension. In a worse case scenario, he fears the City might actually have to close some of its health centres due to a lack of staff.
