Three suspected of assault in hockey violence

Fighting at September’s European Trophy game between Helsinki clubs HIFK and Jokerit has prompted a police investigation which now proceeds to consideration of charges.

The preliminary investigation concluded that there is basis for suspecting three persons of assault. Their names have not been revealed.

Finland’s SM Liiga ice hockey league previously handed out bans to six players. Jokerit forward Semir Ben-Amor received a record ban lasting 18 games. He landed a brutal hit on HIFK’s Ville Peltonen during the game on September 1.

Both teams’ coaches and Jokerit’s assistant coach received bans as well, and the clubs were fined tens of thousands of euros.
