Helsinki’s University of the Arts elects its first rector

Tiina Rosenberg has been elected to be the first rector of the new arts University, which starts operation in January 2013. Rosenberg is a Professor of Theatre Studies and a gender scholar at Stockholm University.

Rosenberg was born and grew up in Helsinki.

She earned her PhD in Theatre Studies from Stockholm University in 1993. She has also worked as professor of gender studies at Stockholm University and at Lund University. Other posts include head of the film department at Stockholm University.

Rosenberg is an internationally acclaimed researcher, and well known social commentator and writer.

The University of the Arts Helsinki is a merger of the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts, the Sibelius Academy of music, and Theatre Academy Helsinki.

The new university will be led by a joint board.

The Academy of Fine Arts, the Sibelius Academy, and Theatre Academy will all continue to operate in their own premises, under the University of the Arts Helsinki.

The new university will have approximately 2000 students, and 600 person-years.

Rosenberg starts as rector on January 1st 2013.
