Foreign Ministry advises against travel to Lebanon

The Finnish Foreign Ministry on Saturday advised citizens to avoid travel to Lebanon, saying that the security situation there is deteriorating as a result of the conflict in Syria.

The Ministry points out that the situation in Lebanon could change rapidly, and anyone already in the country is urged to follow media reports of developments.

The Finnish Foreign Ministry particularly advised avoiding the city of Tripoli, areas along the border with Syria, southern parts of Beirut, the city of Sidon, southern regions of the country, and Palestinian camps.

A number of countries have issued similar warnings. According to Lebanese security sources quoted by Reuters, around 14,000 people, mainly Europeans, left Lebanon last Thursday alone.

There are close to 200 Finnish peacekeepers stationed in the south of Lebanon.
