Speaking during a special session of Parliament’s Grand Committee Wednesday, Finance Minister Jutta Urpilainen said that the top brass of state-owned companies should abandon salary increases since labour unions are being urged to accept only moderate wage hikes.

Urpilainen said that if management and even board members in the state sector refrained from pay increases, their actions could have a positive influence on a collective wage agreement based on modest wage rises.

"It would be good if especially leaders of state companies could adopt a policy that management would refrain from taking pay increases and maybe board members could also turn down fee increases," Urpilainen said during the discussion.

Worker and employer representatives are currently engaged in talks to determine how collective wage agreements could be applied on a sectoral level.
