Detention hearings for the former head of Helsinki’s drug police Jari Aarnio took place Friday at the Helsinki District Court.

Aarnio is already at the centre of an investigation for conflict of interest and bribery surrounding dealings with a provider of surveillance equipment, Trevoc. Trevoc in turn was also found to be closely linked to a criminal group, United Brotherhood.

According to information obtained by Yle, Aarnio is now also under suspicion for drug-related crimes. Aarnio has denied the allegations. His lawyer Riitta Leppiniemi said that the new allegations are linked to a drug case involving a joint operation between the Helsinki drug squad and the National Bureau of Investigation.

"Differences arose during the investigation, and they have been reviewed by the leadership of these units or by persons at management level," Leppiniemi said.

The Court decided Friday afternoon not to release Aarnio. Last month the suspect and three other men were taken into custody on the bribery and conflict of interest suspicions.
