SS: Drug test mix-up saw mother lose child

The Kuopio daily Savon Sanomat reports on Sunday that a mix-up over a drug test caused a mother to lose custody of her child. The National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) confused different blood samples at its laboratory.

Savon Sanomat reports that the woman, who was living in a home for young mothers, saw her child taken into care after the test. The woman had previously used drugs, so was under observation. Her previous tests had all produced negative results, and the woman herself queried the positive test when she met her substance abuse nurse.

A re-test produced a negative result, and mother and child were re-united. THL admitted it was responsible, as the institute had mixed up blood samples and tested the wrong one.

The story did not end there, however, as the woman subsequently complained—the complaint was passed along to several different bodies, until the parliamentary ombudsman ruled that the ministry of health has until the end of May to explain how it will ensure the reliability of testing procedures.
