"The National Coalition is a magnificent popular movement,” Vapaavuori wrote. "I couldn’t imagine a finer task than to act as this popular movement’s chairperson.”
He highlighted his strong commitment to the party and said that stability and decisive action are needed during difficult economic times.
"I have worked with the National Coalition all my adult life. I have a strong emotional bond with the party as well as thousands of conservative parties around the world. I strongly believe in our values and that by working together we can change this country and the world for the better,” he said in a publicly released video.
Who's next?
Vapaavuori is the first politician to announce his intention to run for NCP leadership. Prime Minister Jyrki Katainen announced in early April that he would renounce his leadership of the party, as well as his position as premiere.
The Economic Affairs Minister’s announcement comes as no surprise. Pundits have also speculated on similar such announcements in the offing for European Affairs and Foreign Trade Minister Alexander Stubb and Minister of Public Administration and Local Government Henna Virkkunen, who recently also took on the Transport portfolio. Social Affairs and Health Minister Paula Risikko and Parliamentary Chair Petteri Orpo are also thought to be possible contenders for the post.
Yle reached Alexander Stubb and Petteri Orpo, but neither wished to comment on Vapaavuori’s announcement.
