More Tampere-region swimmers hit with stomach illness

Tampere authorities have added more local lake spots to their list of places to avoid, after more reports of stomach problems from swimmers. THL researchers said a stomach disease epidemic caused by swimming water was ’exceptional’.

On Monday Tampere authorities advised residents to avoid Lake Tesomajärvi after reports of vomiting by children who'd been in the water. They say tests show the water is free from the most dangerous e-coli bacteria, but are waiting for further analysis.

On Tuesday officials reported similar problems from swimmers at three other swimming points in the lakes Tohloppi, Suolijärvi, and Kaukajärvi. It's believed a virus may be behind the illnesses, but authorities say they hope to know for sure in the next two days.

According to researcher Ilkka Miettinen from the National Institute of Health and Welfare THL, it is unusual to have so many health complaints deriving from swimming waters.

”Four cases in one city is exceptional,” Miettinen commented.

Swimming water epidemics usually only surface a few times per year in the whole country.
