The avant-garde Finnish conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen has been named composer-in-residence of the New York Philharmonic, one of the leading US orchestras. The 56 year-old was named to the post of composer-in-residence for three seasons during which time he will compose a new piece for the orchestra.
The New York Philharmonic Orchestra (NYPO) will perform Salonen’s signature piece Los Angeles Variations in a New York premiere in September. The orchestra will also render another Salonen piece, the somewhat lighter “Karawane”.
Salonen won’t only be focusing on writing; he’ll also take up the baton for a series of performances in the Big Apple.
The Finnish conductor famously spent 17 years as music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, after which he joined the London Philharmonic as principal conductor.
