Cross-country skier Matti Heikkinen has secured a win in the men's 15 kilometre free technique race in the World Cup's Canadian tour in Canmore.

Heikkinen came first with an ample lead time of 13.6 seconds over Russian Jevgeni Belov. Marcus Hellner from Sweden came in third, 13.9 seconds after Heikkinen.

The Finnish winner was last victorious in the World Cup some five years ago. Heikkinen now has a total of three World Cup wins.

"Today was a good day and I knew I could pull through in the long uphill portion," Heikkinen says in the Finnish Ski Association release. "It was about time I had another win! It's always a great feeling."

Lari Lehtonen was the second Finn in the top 12, following Heikkinen by 1.01,8 minutes.

The World Cup season ends on Saturday.
