Paper: Medium-sized Finnish firms say minor salary bumps good idea

Business newspaper Kauppalehti reports that representatives from several Finnish medium-sized tech companies which export their goods say that minor salary raises are likely needed for their workers. The current situation of zero-level salary increases in the sector is not good for worker motivation, according to the firms.

Several medium-sized tech industry companies in Finland say they could afford across-the-board raises for their workers. The firms said they could afford to add an extra 0.4 to 0.7 percent to their workers' pay checks, Kauppalehti reported on Friday.

While major raises are not expected, most of the interviewed companies said the modest salary raises would help to increase employee motivation.

The paper said the reason the firms would not raise salaries by more than a full percentage point is that excessive wage increases would reduce their competitiveness on international markets.

At the moment, labour costs in Finland are generally cheaper than their largest competitor nations, Germany and Sweden, according to the paper.
