Midsummer Eve was relatively peaceful in Finland, but police still had plenty of work at the start of what is traditionally regarded as the opening weekend of the summer holiday season.
The 112 emergency services line reported some 12,300 calls on Friday, with 38 percent of those requesting police, 50 percent asking for medical assistance, five percent seeking firefighters and 6 percent looking for social services.
Police in south-east Finland said they were investigating a suspected manslaughter in Ruokolahti. They did not give further details, saying that might endanger an ongoing investigation.
In Kurikka, Ostrobothnia, police detained three people suspected of attempted murder after a man was shot in the yard of a private property on Friday afternoon. The victim was taken to hospital and received treatment for what police described as serious injuries.
In Varkaus, police are appealing for witnesses after a man was suspected of discharging a firearm in the centre of the town at around 10pm on Friday.
Central Finland Police said that Friday night was exceptionally busy, with the Himos festival in Jämsä in particular prompting dozens of call-outs.
In Tampere police detained two aggressive individuals carrying knives on the island of Viikinsaari. Bladed weapons were also used in the suburb of Tampere, where two people were stabbed. Police are investigating the incident as attempted manslaughter.
The most serious incident in the region occurred in Toijala, where one person died in a car accident.
Another motoring accident occurred in Tornio, where an 80-year-old woman died after the driver, an 80-year-old man, lost control of the car she was travelling in.
The Gulf of Finland saw the coast guard called out several times, with one drowning reported in south-west Finland.
In Karvia the body of a 67-year-old man was found in lake Karvianjärvi. He had been fishing with another person on the lake when their boat capsized. Only one of them was found by emergency services searching the area on Friday. The other drowned and his body was recovered on Saturday.
South-west Finland police recorded some 19 incidents of driving under the influence, with 17 different assaults also dealt with.
