Users of the media streaming mobile app Yle Areena will in future be required to log in with an Yle ID in order to access content, according to the Finnish Broadcasting Company (Yle).
The change will come into effect by the end of this year, the broadcaster said in a press release issued on Tuesday. Other services if offers, for example Yle News' English-language website, will still be accessible without logging in.
However, in the long term, Yle wants most users to sign in when accessing its services, and the mobile app requirement is a first step in this direction.
The requirement will help Areena to offer audience members the content they want to see and hear, Yle's Director of Strategy Marit af Björkesten stated in the release.
"Signing up will give Yle a much better understanding of how we should better provide content to people based on their language, location and personal preferences," she said, adding that the platform will use company-developed algorithms in these efforts.
The Areena app will notifiy users when the new rule goes into effect.
