In June, 24 people drowned in Finland, according to preliminary statistics collected by the Finnish Swimming Teaching and Lifesaving Federation (FSL).
The number has nearly doubled in comparison to June 2023 when 13 people drowned in Finland.
Eight people drowned while swimming, six in water traffic incidents, and in 10 cases, the circumstances are unknown.
So far this year, a total of 43 people have drowned in Finland.
There are around 100–150 accidental drownings in Finland every year, about half of them during the summer months, according to FSL.
