The amendment to the Conscription Act enabling reservists to assist the Finnish Border Guard entered into force on Monday.
Moving forward, refresher exercises for reservists may also be organised to maintain border security at short notice.
The procedure would be highly exceptional and would only be used when and to the extent necessary to control the situation at the border.
According to a press release from the Border Guard, the amendment is intended to respond to a year-long exceptional situation at Finland's eastern border with Russia.
The amendment only applies to Border Guard reservists who completed their conscript training under the Finnish Border Guard rather than in the Finnish Defence Forces. The Border Guard said it will contact its reservists in more detail during August and September.
