Such accidents are rare, according to Sanna Lehtinen from the city's transport authority, even though two occurred on consecutive days.

A pedestrian was seriously injured after being hit by a tram in Helsinki on Friday afternoon, according to local rescue services.

The injured person was taken to hospital for treatment, Tapio Tihtonen from the Helsinki Fire Department said.

The incident took place at around 12:30 pm by the tram platforms next to Hakaniemi Market Square.

According to the city's public transport authority, HSL, the accident prompted temporary route changes for other tram lines.

On Thursday, a similar accident involving a tram and a pedestrian took place in front of Helsinki's Central Railway Station just before 5 pm.

That incident involved a woman, but she did not fall under the tram and was conscious when first responders arrived, according to the Helsinki City Rescue Department, which sent three units to the scene.
