Central Finland healthcare providers to cut 330 jobs

The wellbeing services county announced the conclusion of lay-off talks on Tuesday, saying around half the job cuts would be achieved by outsourcing existing roles.

Central Finland wellbeing services county has announced job cuts affecting some 330 people, after talks with unions that began in August.

Around half of the cuts will be executed through outsourcing existing operations. For example, around 30 jobs will transfer to an external operator when the Nova hospital's technical maintenance functions are outsourced.

That means current employees will transfer to the new provider. The hospital's cafe and restaurant operations will also be outsourced.

The county's director Jan Tollet says that compulsory redundancies will, however, be necessary.

"At this stage we already know that around forty people in director, management or specialist positions will be let go," said Tollet.

Cuts will also come through retirements, not renewing temporary contracts and not hiring to fill empty roles, reducing the number of redundancies necessary.

Tollet said that the legally-mandated tasks of the county will continue to be carried out, but opening times might be affected by the budget cuts.

Finland's regional healthcare authorities are facing a budget squeeze this year, as funding from central government is cut. Elections to the councils overseeing these bodies are scheduled for next April.
