UK newspaper the Telegraph has listed Tampere, Finland as one of their top ten winter destinations in the world.

Tampere was the only Finnish destination to make the paper's top ten list of the "best winter wonderlands". It was also one of just two city destinations on the list, along with Alta, Norway.

Tampere is in good company, as the others on the list were the Swiss Alps, the Italian Dolomites, Iceland, the Yukon in Canada, Alaska, Scotland, Japan and Wyoming in the US.

The sites are not ranked and the paper did not explain their methodology for selecting the list. However, they emphasised the uniqueness of the locations and the fact that there are not too many tourists at the destinations.

The paper's inclusion of Tampere was as a destination for sauna enthusiasts.

"Finland’s sauna culture was inscribed on the Unesco list in 2020 and the very best place to experience it is Tampere, sauna capital of the world," the paper wrote.

There are more than 60 public saunas in the Tampere area, including the 118-year-old Rajaportti Sauna, mentioned by the paper.

The paper noted that saunas are popular on Christmas Eve as families engage in the tradition of cleansing their bodies and minds for the holiday ahead.

The paper also suggested activities like cross country skiing in Tampere, as well as walking in the forest and dog sledding.
