At a European Union summit in Brussels on Thursday, Prime Minister Petteri Orpo (NCP) said that Europe has learned its lesson from Russia's attack on Ukraine, and now sees Moscow as a permanent threat.

At the meeting, EU leaders are to decide on strengthening their defence capabilities and further supporting Ukraine.

Orpo said that the process of Ukraine's EU membership should be accelerated.

"Ukraine wants to join us. We must help and support them toward membership, no later than 2030," Orpo told reporters as he arrived for the summit at the Europa Building Forum in Brussels.

Under EU law, candidate countries are not eligible to join the bloc as long as they have any unresolved border disputes.
