Finnish defence and technology company Patria has announced a 40 million euro investment to expand and enhance its armoured vehicle production facility in Hämeenlinna. The expansion is expected to nearly double production capacity by 2027.

According to Patria, the project includes the construction of a new production facility, a surface treatment area and upgrades to existing infrastructure. Preparations for construction have already begun.

Increased demand driving expansion

Patria stated that its order book has grown significantly, driven in large part by its armoured vehicle programmes. The expansion will require additional staff, particularly experts in production, quality and design.

At the end of last year, the Hämeenlinna facility employed over 500 people. Patria's Director of Communications, Sirje Ahvenlampi-Hyvönen, noted that the site has hired between 125 and 130 new employees over the past two years.

"This year, we are looking at recruiting 130 new employees," Ahvenlampi-Hyvönen said.

Mikko Leino, head of Patria's Operations unit, stated that the expansion aims to accelerate deliveries of current orders while preparing for new contracts and the production of new products, including weapon systems and tracked vehicles.

Growth linked to multinational defence project

Patria's growth is closely tied to the multinational Common Armoured Vehicle System (Cavs) programme, in which its Patria 6x6 vehicle plays a key role. Finland, Sweden, Latvia and Germany are already part of the programme, with additional countries expected to join.

"The investment is also an important part of strengthening the EU’s Defence Technological and Industrial Base (EDTIB)", Leino added.

Through the initiative, Patria has received orders for more than 800 Patria 6x6 vehicles, with over 200 already delivered. The company is also involved in projects related to the Patria AMV XP 8x8 vehicle, with ongoing efforts in Slovakia and Japan.

In addition to Hämeenlinna, Patria produces the Patria 6x6 at its facility in Valmiera, Latvia, which opened in May 2024.

While the company manufactures initial batches of armoured vehicles in-house, large-scale deliveries often utilise the industrial capabilities of partner nations.
