Doctor's statements required for obtaining a driving licence will in future come from private doctors, rather than public sector ones, according to a statement from the Ministry for Social Affairs and Health.

It said that those who need to drive for work can seek a statement from their occupational healthcare provider, if they offer such a service.

The law mandating the change comes into force from the start of April, and after that public sector healthcare providers will no longer be required to offer statements for the purposes of renewing or obtaining a driving licence.

There will be some exceptions to the ban. Students whose course of study demands they acquire a bus or heavy goods vehicle licence will be able to get a medical statement from public sector doctors, for example.
