Jörg Widmann is not only a conductor and a clarinettist but also one of the most oft-performed contemporary composers. His composing grew out of a need to note down good improvisations. This led to experimenting and the testing of technical limits. One of the results was his youthful Fantasie. Con brio uses an instrumental line-up favoured by Beethoven and thus has associations with something very familiar. It is a difficult work to play – even for the composer, it is said.
