He would never, said legendary Swedish conductor Herbert Blomstedt, grow tired of music. Seven decades will have passed this year since he first made his debut on the conductor’s podium. Mahler’s ninth symphony sounds, to subsequent generations, like a farewell, but when he wrote it, he still envisaged a future and ways of breaking the magical nine-symphony curse. It was, however to be his last complete symphony.
