Two of the 20th century’s most beautiful slow movements meet in this concert. The enchanting melody of the Adagio in Maurice Ravel’s G major concerto is balm to the ears. The magnificent Adagietto from Mahler’s fifth symphony is sometimes played at funerals, though it is in fact a declaration of love to his fiancée Alma and, in the overall scheme of the symphony, a preparation for the great triumph of the finale.
