Abstract
Carbon bisulphide and hydrogen sulphide are obtained in a process which comprises passing sulphur vapour and saturated hydrocarbon gas, for example, methane, at pressures over 10 atmospheres, preferably 10-20 atmospheres, through a heating furnace at 450 DEG -750 DEG C., separating hydrogen sulphide and unreacted hydrocarbons from the carbon bisulphide and unreacted sulphur at a temperature above 120 DEG C. and a pressure above 9 atmospheres, preferably 9-10 atmospheres, and separating the carbon bisulphide from the unreacted sulphur at above 120 DEG C. and above 6 atmospheres. If desired a major portion of the unreacted sulphur may be separated in liquid form prior to separating the hydrogen sulphide and unreacted hydrocarbons. In this case it may not be necessary to effect the final separation of carbon bisulphide and sulphur. The separated sulphur may be returned to the furnace. The reaction mixture is preferably passed through the furnace at a space velocity of 200-2000 reciprocal hours, and the residence time is preferably 6 seconds to 1,2 minutes. Specifications 796,153, 798,947, 802,425 and 811,456 are referred to.
