Phenylethylamine derivs. of formula QCH2CHMeNR1R2 (I) (where Q is CF3-A-C6H4-; A is O or S; R1 and R2 are each H or 1-4C alkyl or NR1R2 is a heterocycle opt. contg. further deteroatom(s), e.g. piperidino, (thia)morpholino) are prepd. by (a) converting Q-NH2 to Q-CHO, pref. by diazotisation and treatment with formaldoxime, (b) converting to Q-CH=CMe-NO2, (c) converting to Q-CH2COMe and (d) converting to (I) pref. by reaction with NHR1R2 in presence of HgCl2 and Al turnings. Process is simple and cheap and may be used industrially.
