Abstract

The manned vehicle is driven over the sea bed by caterpillar tracks and is equipped with an articulated excavator wheel scooping out a trench of predetermined depth. The appts. has a cable feed and guide for laying cable from a surface vessel into the trench. The cable tension is controlled by a hydraulic jack, governing the angle of inclination of the guide through which the cable is fed between two sets of rollers, hydraulically driven at a speed related to that of the caterpillar drive. The depth of excavation is controlled by another hydraulic jack and the excavated material is pumped through a conduit and discharged from a channel to backfill the trench behind the cable. The cable is laid much more quickly and economically at constant tension and at controlled depth in a single traverse of the sea bed.
