Abstract
1,006,327. Bearings. SCHWITZER CORPORATION. April 2, 1962 [April 28, 1961], No. 12541/62. Heading F2A. A thrust-bearing assembly for a rotatable shaft 14 comprises a stationary annular thrust member 56 (Figs. 2 and 3) having a bore 67 in which it is freely accommodated into which an outlet from a passage 63 opens, one ring or two rings 51, 52 rotatable with the shaft located adjacent the member 56 to form one or two pairs of thrust surfaces resisting axial movement of the shaft in one direction, and means for introducing a lubricating and cooling fluid into the passage 63 from the outlet axially along the bore and radially outward between the opposed thrust surfaces. Oil-deflecting members 39, 66 form a hood adjacent the member 56, which has surfaces grooved at 60 (Fig. 4) to assist flow away of the fluid. In this form shown the fluid passage extends between an inlet 49 in the central portion 24 of an intermediate casting 21, attached to a turbine housing 10, through the passages 47 and 63 to the outlet, the shaft 14 being that of a turbocharger. The turbine housing 10 has an inlet passage 18 transmitting high-pressure engine exhaust gases through the turbine wheel, to rotate it by their expansion, and then to be discharged through the passage 19.
