Abstract

A chlorinated or brominated polymer is obtained by reacting a terpolymer of ethylene, a higher alpha-olefin and a non-conjugated diene with molecular halogen or an organic halogen-containing compound whereby a product containing at least 1% of chlorine or bromine is obtained. The preferred terpolymers are derived from propylene and 1,4-hexadiene or dicyclopentadiene, and the halogen-containing compound may be N-chloro or -bromo succinimide or acetamide, or bromo-, dibromo- or dichloro-dimethylhydantoin. The halogenated polymers may be vulcanized with/without natural or synthetic rubber using sulphur or phenol dialcohol curing agents. Applications specified are tyres, belts, hose and adhesives.
