Abstract

1,098,889. Sensing cards. FERRANTI Ltd. Sept. 12, 1966 [Sept. 17, 1965], No. 39774/65. Heading G4M. A coded card which carries areas of magnetic material is read by an array of reed switches, the switches are normally held in one state by associated local magnetic fields e.g. from permanent magnets, and the insertion of the card modifies the configuration of selected magnetic fields so that the states of the corresponding switches are altered. The card may be formed from discrete areas of magnetic material forming magnetic shunts or flux concentrators and enclosed between sheets of non-magnetic material. Alternatively the card may contain a sheet of magnetic material which is perforated at selected positions. A microswitch may be actuated when the card is correctly inserted, and this switch may be used to energize electromagnets producing the local magnetic fields.
