Abstract

1,150,362. Carbon-black. R. MOREL. 27 May, 1966 [31 May, 1965], No. 23837/66. Heading C1A. Carbon black is produced by atomizing a liquid hydrocarbon, bringing it in contact with a hot gas within a combined space to crack the hydrocarbon into carbonblack and tail-gases, wherein the tail gases are freed of water vapour and combustible components and fed with air and a combustible gas to the confined space thus forming a hot gas. An inert gas may form part of the gaseous medium. The Figure shows a layout of an installation according to the invention. This Figure shows a combustion chamber 1, followed by a cracking antechamber 2a and cracking chamber 2. Pipes A and G deliver air and a combustible gas to the burner B. The liquid hydrocarbon is led into chamber 1 by an atomizer GT fed by a pipe T, which is pressurized by mechanical means. The gases produced, containing carbon-black in suspension, are quenched by quenching device 14 and pass through a tubular exchanger 4 which is used for heating combustion air which is fed to chamber 1. A temperature detector CT controls the temperature of air supplied to the combustion chamber. The gases from 4 pass through cyclones 5 and filters 6 to remove the carbon-black. The tail gases pass to cooler 10 where their water content is condensed. The tail-gases are mixed with fuel gas and burned in the incinerator 7. Combustion air is supplied to 7 by fan 9, after having passed through the cooler 10 where it becomes heated by the tailgases. The residual gas from 7 passes to the burner and part may be injected by compressor 13 into the atomizer GT. This latter supply may be controlled by valve V 2 so that the velocity of the atomized hydrocarbon particles may be controlled, and hence different grades of carbonblack may be produced. Residual gases may also be prepared by removing hydrogen and water from the tail-gases at the outlet of filters 6, and then converting the remaining carbonmonoxide to carbon dioxide. Alternatively, the tail-gases freed of their water of condensation may be passed to a catalytic bed whereby the carbon monoxide and hydrogen are oxidized, giving an inert gas.
