Oil gas; scrubbers and washers.-Combustible waste gases and soot are obtained by the incomplete combustion of a liquid or gaseous hydrocarbon at a temperature of 2000-3000‹ F. the carbon-laden gases being removed rapidly from the combustion zone, and after cooling without suddenly chilling, preferably to between 250- 1100‹ F. are treated while still travelling at over 500 feet per minute to separate the carbon particles. Combustion is effected in a chamber having a metal shell 1, Figs. 1. 2, the upper portion 2 of which has a water cooling-jacket and the lower portion a refractory lining 3. When liquid hydrocarbon is used, the burner, enclosed in a casing 4, comprises a nozzle 10<1> supplied with oil through control valve 27 and pipes 28, LO. A sleeve surrounds nozzle 10<1> and is supplied with high pressure air, which may be replaced by steam for cleaning the burner when the apparatus is closed down. Air is also supplied through inlets 9, 12 to the burner, inlet 9 being connected through pipes 21, 19 to an air pipe 17 to which inlet 12 is also connected through a valve 14. The casing 4 is provided with a refractory pipe section which forms, an annular passage d and vertical passages b, c for the air from inlet 12 ; manholes 6, 6<1> are provided for ignition and cleaning purposes. The air supply to pipe 17 may be preheated, for example to 500-2000‹ F., by passage from blower 31 through tubes 30 at the rear of the furnace 1. A bye-pass 76 is used when preheating is not desired. 5-9 parts by weight of air are employed for each part of oil consumed. In a modified form of burner, Fig. 6, for use with gaseous hydrocarbons, the gas is supplied through a pipe 10<2> to between plates x, y, low pressure air being fed thereto through passages d' ,b<1>, c<1>, e'. The gases are passed through branch cooling pipes 33, 33<1> of considerable length and thence through pipe 38 to a soot collector 34. In one form, Fig. 7, the collector comprises a casing containing a series of discs 36 rotated by a shaft 35. The discs 36 are provided with radial slots which are in staggered relation on successive discs. Heavy petroleum oil or other ink vehicle is supplied through pipe 38<1> from a large tank 42 having heating coils 43, the vehicle being withdrawn from the collector through pipe 39<1> and pump 41 which provides constant circulation. The exit gases from the collector may be treated in electrical or other dust collectors to remove further guantities of soot. In another form, a combined centrifugal spray scrubber and electrical precipitator 55, Fig. 9, is employed. The combustion gases are drawn from pipes 33, 33<1> by a fan 49<1> provided on the underside of a disc 49 rotated at high speed by a motor 51. The waste gases leave the precipitator through outlet 12. Oxygen or other oxidizing media may replace the air used in the burner; and the air &c. may be preheated by burning the waste gases from which the soot has been separated.
