The laminated core of a choke coil or transformer comprises a U-shaped portion 5 surrounding a T-shaped portion 1, the two portions being held together by a band 6 whose longitudinal edges are bent so as to engage grooves 10 in the U-shaped core portion. An air gap 12, held open by an insulating component, e.g. a chipboard piece, is provided.
