Abstract

1,209,315. Tensioning flexible elements. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. 18 April, 1968 [21 April, 1967], No. 18591/67. Heading B8B. [Also in Division D1] A device for tensioning elongate flexible material e.g. thread, wire rope or cable comprises fluid pressure operated variable tensioning means and feedback means responsive to changes in the tension of the material leaving the tension device to adjust the tensioning means so as to tend to cancel the changes. As shown thread 10 is tensioned by being deflected between stationary members 12 and a member 13 mounted on bellows 14. The yarn leaving the device passes through a loop 17 mounted on a spring 18 so that when the output tension of the yarn increases the spring is pulled away from a nozzle 19. Nozzle 19 is fed with pressurized fluid e.g. air and the position of spring 18 determines the pressure within the nozzle. The interior of the nozzle is connected to the bellows 14 and the arrangement is such that tension changes in the outgoing yarn tend to be erradicated. The mean tension is set by regulating the pressure of the fluid source or by varying a throttle 15. In an alternative form the pressure changes in tube 16 may actuate a single or multi-phase fluidic amplifier. In other forms a thread passes about the central post of a double disc tensioner, the pressure of the discs being regulated by bellows or a flexible bag. In Fig. 3, not shown, cable, e.g. pre-stressing cable is passed about a drum capstan (31). The tension in the outgoing cable is sensed by a feeler attached to a movable diaphragm (36) and the pressure within a nozzle (19) varied accordingly. These pressure variations operate a fluidic amplifier which causes a brake to be applied to or released from a disc mounted on the capstan shaft.
