704,672. Unwinding webs. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES, Ltd. Oct. 26, 1951 [Oct. 27, 1950], No. 26285/50. Class 100 (1). [Also in Groups XXV and XXXIV] A web, being unwound from a reel, is tensioned by a brake adjusted to vary the braking effect on the reel controlled by the web passing over an aperture through which compressed gas supplied to a pneumatic chamber is allowed to leak, such that the web tension controls the escape of gas, the pressure changes in the chamber being translated into appropriate adjustments of the brake by a relay. As applied to a machine for winding a web around an electric conductor passing through a spindle 7, a web 1, unwound from a reel 2 rotatably mounted on a spindle 3 by a hollow boss 16, is braked by a friction disc 23 engaging a brake disc 20, the spindle 3 being rotatable around the spindle 7. The reel 2 is tightly gripped between the disc 20 and a removable screwed disc 21. The friction disc 23 is secured to a ring 24 carried by a resilient spider 25 mounted on a boss 130, such that appropriate deflection of a diaphragm 28 of a pressure chamber 27 causes flexing of the spider and application of the brake. Compressed air reaches the chamber 27 through passages 34, radial apertures 32 terminating in key-ways 33, a passage 31, and a pipe 35. A valve 38, controlled by a pneumatic relay 39, determines the air pressure in the chamber 27 and thus the braking effect of the disc 23 in accordance with the web tension as detected by a slot 159 in a nozzle 54 over which the web passes. An increase in web tension thus causes an increase in air pressure in a chamber 52 due to a reduction in air leakage through the slot 59, the increased pressure causing deflection of a diaphragm 57 and movement to the right (as seen in Fig. 3) of a valve stem 58 secured thereto. The stem 58 operates a slide valve 45 within a sleeve 46 connected to pipes 48, 49 and 50, such that air pressure is supplied from the pipe 48 via the pipe 50 to a chamber 41, thus causing movement of a diaphragm 43 and valve stem 44 to open the valve 38. Similarly, a reduction in web tension causes opposite movement of the stem 58, thus supplying air pressure to a chamber 40 and resulting in closing of the valve 38 by actuation of a second diaphragm 43 connected to the stem 44.
