Abstract

1,242,628. Cross-linking olefin terpolymers. SOLVAY & CIE. 8 Dec., 1969 [18 Dec., 1968], No. 59742/69. Heading C3P. Elastomeric compositions which cross-link spontaneously at ambient temperatures comprise an ethylene/propylene/non-conjugated diene terpolymer and a ketone peroxide, optionally with one or more accelerators. The non- conjugated diene may be pentadiene-1,4- hexadiene-1,4, hexadiene-1,5, 4-vinylcyclohexene, 1,3-divinylcyclohexane, cycloheptadiene-1,4, cyclooctadiene-1,5, dicyclopentadiene, norbornadiene, methylenenorbornene and ethylidene norbornene. The peroxide may be methyl ethyl ketone or methyl isobutyl ketone peroxide, and specified accelerators are cobalt naphthenate, cobalt octoate and dimethyl aniline. The compositions may also contain fillers, e.g. talc, chalk, kaolin, carbon black, asbestos and precipitated calcium carbonate; mineral oils and ester plasticizers; solvents, e.g. xylene; and coumarone, colophony, phenol/formaldehyde and terpene resins ; and may be used as jointing compositions. Examples describe compositions comprising terpolymer, carbon black or calcium carbonate, methyl ethyl ketone or methyl isobutyl ketone peroxide, with or without cobalt octoate, in dimethyl phthalate, paraffin oil and xylene.
