Abstract

1347713 Lubricant additives SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ NV 5 May 1971 13211/71 Heading C5F [Also in Division C3] Lubricating oils include as a pour-point depressant additive one or more oil-soluble alkyl methacrylate polymer compositions comprising at least a major proportion of polymeric molecules derived from at least six different alkyl methacrylates having 9 to 18 carbon atoms in the alkyl groups thereof and at most a minor proportion of polymeric molecules derived from alkyl methacrylates having less than 9 and/or more than 18 carbon atoms in the alkyl groups thereof, said polymer composition having an average number of carbon atoms in the C 9 to G 18 alkyl groups present therein which is from 12À4 to 13À7. Preferably substantially all the alkyl groups present have 9 to 18 carbon atoms and suitably some of the alkyl groups, e.g. 5-25% of the alkyl groups, are branched alkyl groups containing at least one tertiary, or quaternary carbon atom. The polymer compositions can be prepared by polymerizing a corresponding mixture of monomeric alkyl methacrylates. The lubricating oil may contain 0À01-2À0% by weight of the polymer compositions, preferably 0À05-0À5%. Optional components which may also be present include antioxidants, detergent additives, viscosityincreasing compounds, anticorrosives, antifoaming agents and agents to improve lubricating effect.
