Abstract

1438363 High pile fabric knitting machines GLEOINT MILLS INC 21 Aug 1973 [6 Nov 1972] 39464/73 Headings D1C and D1K In sliver feeding means for a high pile fabric knitting machine, a doffer 28 and main cylinder 30 are driven from the ring gear 24 of the machine at selected constant speeds while the drive of the sliver feed rolls 40, 44 is controlled by fabric density control means including gears selectable to vary the speed of drive of these rolls. As shown, the knitting machine has eight sliver and yarn feeding knitting stations 1-8 each preceded by a pattern mechanism 11-18. Rolls 40, 44 have wire coverings 42, 46 to shred the sliver and rotate at e.g. <1>/100 speed of main cylinder 30, which also has a wire covering Gearing 24 drives, through gearing, a shaft 64 carrying a cone of gears 72 of increasing diameters and numbers of teeth. Keyed on a shaft 74 parallel to shaft 64 is a gear 84 which meshes with an idler gear 88, these gears being axially movable by a manual control to engage gear 88 with one of the gears of cone 72 to vary selectively the speed of rotation of shaft 74. A sprocket wheel 112 on shaft 74 drives a sprocket wheel 116 on the element 120 of a magnetic clutch 118 through which rolls 40, 44 are driven is rotatable on a tube 122 and includes clutch plate 124. When a second clutch element 128 is electrically energised, plate 124 is attracted to engage a plate 130 on element 128 which is then rotated. Each clutch 118 is controlled by a patterning mechanism including a needle selection pattern drum 150. By varying the speed of feed rolls 40, 44 it is possible, with the same sliver, to knit high pile fabrics of different pile density.
