Abstract

994,299. Knitting-machines. SINGER CO. May 6,1964 [May 6, 1963],No. 18921/64. Heading D1C. The dial of a cylinder-and-dial machine is driven from the cylinder by means of two rollers 56, 58 one 56 of which is secured to the needle cylinder driving gear ring 13 and the other 58 of which is secured to the annular dial driving support 33. The drive to the dial is imparted from the cylinder by the roller 56 bearing against the roller 58 with the fabric issuing from the needles passing between the two rollers so that the driving force is transmitted through the fabric. Simultaneously one of the rollers 56 is rotated by a gear 116 driven from the fabric take-up mechanism of the machine so that the roller 56 assists the passage of the fabric between the rollers 56, 58 at a rate equivalent to the rate of take-up of the fabric by the take-up roller. Alternatively the one roller may be totated through a worm and gear drive, the worm of which is normally held stationary as the dial rotates but which periodically is released to enable the roller to adjust itself to the rate of take-up of the fabric. The drive to the machine is transmitted through a clutch from an electric motor.
