Abstract
189,102. Ram, G. H. E. de. Nov. 15, 1921, [Convention date]. Void (Published under Sect. 91 of the Act]. Dash-pots.-A shockabsorber for the spring supports of vehicles, comprises a cylinder 1, Fig. 1, filled with liquid and divided by a piston 2, connected to the axle, into two chambers 10, 11 communicating with each other by lateral conduits 3, 4 through a series of spring-pressed valves 5, a spring-pressed valve 8 and openings 6, 7. The valves 5 are arranged to open successively at fixed pressures. and the piston, advancing when the axle rises. marks them in turn. The valves are so constructed that the passage corresponds to the lift, and the resistance to the piston is thus varied to increase in proportion to the amplitude and to the square of the speed of the axle displacement. The return of the liquid may be similarly braked by a series of valves replacing the valve 8. An automatic regulating device may replace the valves 5. Fig. 7 shows a shock absorber 13 to which is applied a coiled suspension spring 19 and a pneumatic flexibility corrector 14 arranged in chambers partially filled with liquid. Axle oscillations are transmitted by an arm 17 and a rod 18. During compression of the liquid in chamber 13, a leakage occurs around the piston 20 and a vacuum is produced in chamber 16, which is overome by advent of liquid from a reservoir 25 through a valve 21. The liquid escaping round the piston is collected by a groove 22 and returns to the reservoir through a conduit 23.
