Abstract

Display apparatus for a meter comprises a bank of co-axial counter wheels 4 having printed round the periphery thereof, instead of or in addition to conventional numbers, elements of an optical bar code known per se. The elements of each wheel are brought successively into register with a common window upon rotation of the wheel and the meter can be read by scanning a light pen across the window. The invention can be applied to, for example, electricity, gas, oil or water meters and magnetic rather than optical codes can be employed. Initiating and terminating codes 10, 12 and a meter identity code 14 may also be provided. Logic may be provided to discriminate against false lines, arising for example from the gaps between the wheels. <IMAGE>
