Abstract
247,606. Elek, S. Feb. 14, 1925, [Convention date]. Tacheometers.-In order to utilize the telescope of a surveying instrument for distance measuring, two prisms lenses or mirrors are arranged in front of the eye-piece and at an angle to one another so as to divide the field of vision into right and left hand portions, having optical axes with a given difference of level. By this means the distance of the stadia rod from the instrument can be read directly by observing the apparent position of the vernier in one half of the field with reference to the zero position of stadia rod in the other half of the field. In the example utilizing reflecting prisms a, b the rays o from the object glass are reflected from the relatively inclined surfaces, T1, T2, t1, t2 so that they emerge from the two prisms with a difference of level amounting, e.g. to one-hundredth of the focal length of the objective g. In this case, the distance is one hundred times the apparent difference of position of the vernier and zero of the rod. An initial adjustment of the vernier enables the distance to be calculated to the centre of the observing instrument. In other examples, refracting prisms and portions of concave lenses are used to produce the same result.
