Hydrocarbons.-Hydrocarbon oils resembling petroleum are obtained by heating methane or a gas containing methane to a temperature of 200- 600‹ C., under pressure and in the presence of a catalyst; gases such as ethane and butane are also produced. The catalyst may comprise a metallic oxide, such as iron oxide, a mixture of metallic oxides, or the metals arising from the reduction of the oxides. The presence of hydrogen, or gases such as oxygen capable of combining with hydrogen, promotes the reaction.
