Hydrogen is produced by subjecting hydrocarbons or mixtures containing them to partial combustion with a limited amount of oxygen or gas richer in oxygen than air so that the resulting mixture still contains appreciable amounts of hydrocarbons, adding steam if not already prosent, and passing the mixture over a catalyst which at least converts the hydrocarbons into carbon monoxide and hydrogen, and if desired brings about the complete conversion of the hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, and steam into carbon dioxide and hydrogen. In the former case the product is a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen, in the latter case the carbon dioxide may be removed leaving pure hydrogen. The partial combustion may be replaced by a partial thermal decomposition effected by passing the gas through a heated tube. An alternative method of procedure consists in subjecting only a portion of the gas to combustion and mixing the product with the remaining untreated portion before passing it over the cataylst. Two stages of catalytic treatment may be employed, the first using a heat-resisting but less active catalyst such as nickel on fireproof maternal and the second a less resistant but highly active catalyst such as nickel activated by alumina or magnesia, or an activated nickel-iron catalyst. Sulphur compounds are preferalbly removed from the gas before treatment. According to an example, 44 cubic metres of coal gas containing 30 per cent. of hydrocarbons are partly burned with 11 cubic metres of oxygen and 12 kgs. of steam ; the product with the addition of 18 kgs. of steam is passed over nickel activated with alumina and finally over iron and chromium oxide. The reaction mixture consists chiefly of hydrogen and carbon dioxide. In a similar example the iron. chromium catalyst is omitted ; the product consists largely of hydrogen and carbon monoxide and may be mixed with water gas to give a mixture suitable for methanol synthesis Specification 231,218 is referred to.
