Abstract

Stuffing - boxes, substitutes for. - In packing for a revolving shaft of the type in which a sleeve 3, rotating with the shaft, but slidable on it, is pressed against a stationary ring 6 by a spring 18, which serves also to compress packing 9 within the sleeve 3, the spring 18 surrounds the sleeve 3 and abuts on an external flange on an outer sleeve 11, an internal flange 12 on which engages a follower 10, by means of which the packing 9 is compressed. The ring 6 presses on a packing-ring 8 in a groove in the casing and rotation of the ring is prevented by means of a pin 7. The packing is especially applicable for the compressor shaft B of a refrigerating plant and is enclosed in a casing 1 containing lubricant. A similar packing may be arranged at the inner end of the casing, the spring 18 being arranged between the packings, or, as shown the spring may abut on a thrust bearing 20.
