Abstract
269,344. Webster, H. Oct. 17, 1925. Continuous kilns.-A kiln system comprises a number of separte kilns 1 - - 12 connected in series by diametral flues f beneath the kiln floors, an external longitudinal flue g for each line of kilns and a pair of transverse flues a, a<1> between adjacent kilns, the arrangement being such that the flues a, a<1> can be connected to the flues f or g or to stack flues e. Each kiln has peripheral fireplaces, a bag wall c, a perforated floor d, and an annular floor flue b, which communicates with the diametral flue of the next kiln in the series. A third longitudinal flue h may be provided between the two lines of kilns to receive surplus gases for use elsewhere, e.g. in a drier. In the lower part of Fig. 1, in which the open and closed junctions between the flues are shown by broken and full lines respectively, and the direction of flow of the gases by arrows, kiln 1 is cooling down and the heated air is delivered to the surplus heat flue h. Kiln is also cooling and the hot air therefrom is taken through the flue g to kiln 6 from which it passes to the stack e. Kiln 3 is under fire for salt glazing, and the waste gases are taken direct to the stack, while kiln 4 is on full fire and its waste heat is passed through kiln 5 on its way to the stack.
