Stuffing-boxes, substitutes for. - In packing comprising a collar G carried by a flexible diaphragm H and pressed by a spring T against a collar N on the shaft, a recess S for collecting lubricating fluid being formed in the rubbing surfaces, the collar N is clamped against a shoulder O on the shaft by a gear-wheel P, or other member on the shaft, or is formed integral with the gear-wheel. A packing ring R may be inserted between the collar N and the shoulder O. The diaphragm may be sweated to the casing and to the collar G, or may be clamped by a ring K and a nut J with interposed packing- rings.
